Achim Kaufmann wins the Albert Mangelsdorff Award

Our hearty congratulations to pianist and composer Achim Kaufmann for winning the much deserved Albert Mangelsdorff Award, also known as the German Jazz Prize. Kaufmann, who also works as a bandleader and improviser, lives in Berlin. The award will be handed to him on November 6 at the JazzFest Berlin, Haus der Berliner Festspiele.
Albert Mangelsdorff Award Jury Statement: Achim Kaufmann gehört seit vielen Jahren zu den an- und aufregendsten Persönlichkeiten der europäischen Jazz- und Improvisationsszene. Seine Musik zeugt von harmonischer Feinsinnigkeit und strukturellem Tiefgang; als brillanter Pianist und Komponist hat er über die reflektierte Auseinandersetzung mit der Tradition zu einer nuancierten, jetzt-zeitigen Klangsprache gefunden, in der Poesie, Energie und Abstraktion gleichermaßen präsent sind.
Since 1994, the Albert Mangelsdorff Award, named after the legendary trombone player, takes account of the individual artistic aspect of jazz, and aims to reward outstanding and continuous achievements in jazz music.
The prize money is donated by the GEMA Foundation, GVL and DKV and is awarded every two years to an outstanding personality of the German jazz scene. Read More at Jazzthing
